Peshawar (elevation 327 m) is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South Asia, with documented settlement going back over 2,000 years. Its Old City — locally called the Walled City or Qila — is a dense, historic district of bazaars, mosques, caravanserais, and havelis.

Qissa Khwani Bazaar — The Street of Storytellers

Qissa Khwani (literally Street of Storytellers) was historically a rest stop on the Silk Road where caravans from Central Asia, Persia, and India stopped and traders exchanged news and stories over tea. Today it is a busy commercial street known for handicrafts, dry fruits, spices, and traditional teahouses (chai khanas); individual shop hours vary.

Namak Mandi — Peshawar's Food Street

Namak Mandi (the Salt Market) is Peshawar's most famous food destination, concentrated on a short stretch near the old salt trade quarter. It is known for two dishes above all others:

  • check_circleCharsi Tikka: lamb or beef cuts grilled on open wood fire, minimally spiced to let the meat quality speak. Food-stall hours vary and visitors should confirm before making a special trip.
  • check_circlePeshawari Karahi: cooked in a wok (karahi) with minimal spice — black pepper, cumin, fresh tomato, green chilli — finished with fresh coriander.
  • check_circleDumpukht: slow-cooked lamb in a sealed pot, a method associated with Mughal-era royal kitchens and still done traditionally in a few Old City restaurants.

Mahabat Khan Mosque (1630 AD)

Built in the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan by his governor Nawab Mahabat Khan, this is one of the finest examples of Mughal-era frescoes and fluted minarets in Pakistan. Open to respectful visitors; modest dress required. Note that entry for sightseeing is paused during the five daily congregational prayer times. Located in Andar Shehr (Inner City), a 5-minute walk from Qissa Khwani. No entry ticket; voluntary contributions to the mosque fund are accepted.

Bala Hisar Fort (exterior only — active military)

Bala Hisar Fort overlooks the Old City from the northeast. The current structure dates from Sikh rule (early 19th century) though fortifications on this hill are ancient. The fort is an active Frontier Corps headquarters — interior access is not permitted for civilians. The exterior is visible from Gor Khatri courtyard.

Gor Khatri Caravanserai

Gor Khatri is a 17th-century caravanserai (rest house for merchants) that has been excavated to reveal layers going back to Buddhist and Hindu Shahi periods. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Archaeology Department manages the site. Restoration is ongoing; check local news for current access status before visiting.
