Skardu is the adventure capital of Pakistan, situated at 2,228m in Gilgit-Baltistan. It's the launching point for expeditions to K2 (8,611m) — the world's second-highest mountain — and home to the ethereal Deosai National Park (the second-highest plateau on Earth). Shangrila Lake, Skardu Fort, and Satpara Lake are must-visits.
PIA and Air Sial fly from Islamabad to Skardu Airport (1 hour). Road via Karakoram Highway takes 18-20 hours from Islamabad. Flights are weather-dependent — always have buffer days.
June to September is peak season with clear skies for trekking. May and October offer fewer crowds. Winter is harsh with limited accommodation open.
Yes — treks above 6,000m require permits from Alpine Club of Pakistan. Deosai National Park has an entry fee. K2 BC trek requires a registered guide and trekking permit.
Skardu is affordable by international standards. Basic guesthouses start from PKR 1,500/night. Food at local dhabas is very cheap. Transport to trailheads varies.
