Some places live up to the photographs. Hunza is one of them. Tucked into the Karakoram in Gilgit-Baltistan, this high mountain valley gives you apricot orchards below 7,000-metre peaks, centuries-old forts perched over the river, and some of the clearest night skies in Asia. It''s also perfectly doable on a backpacker budget — if you know how the journey and the costs really work.
Why Hunza is worth the journey
Hunza rewards slow travel. Base yourself in Karimabad, the valley''s main town, and you''re within reach of Baltit and Altit forts, the turquoise Attabad Lake, the Passu Cones, and the Eagle''s Nest viewpoint at sunrise. The pace is gentle, the air is thin and clean, and the hospitality is extraordinary even by Pakistani standards.
How to get to Karimabad
There are two routes north, and both start in Islamabad. Flying is fastest: a domestic flight from Islamabad to Gilgit takes under an hour and costs roughly USD 40–60 each way — but mountain weather cancels flights often, so build a spare day into your plan on either side. The overland option is the legendary Karakoram Highway: around 600 km of mountain road, 12–16 hours by bus or private car, and an experience in itself. From Gilgit, a shared KKH minibus to Karimabad costs about USD 2 and takes roughly two hours.
If you fly, keep your itinerary flexible. A cancelled Gilgit flight is common, not a disaster — locals plan around it, and so should you.
What a day in Hunza costs
Hunza is astonishingly good value. A realistic daily budget — bed, three meals, and local transport — sits around USD 25–45 per person. A typical Pakistani meal costs about USD 3, and shared jeeps to viewpoints are cheap when split with other travellers. A comfortable four-to-six-day trip from Islamabad, including transport, guesthouse, and food, generally lands between PKR 25,000 and PKR 80,000 per person depending on how you travel.
